Te Tairawhiti (also known as Eastland) is a region of diverse landscapes, where in a day you can journey through native forests, stunning lakes and rivers, and find a deserted beach or two.

Along the way you will discover a handful of small coastal townships and unique east coast scenery presenting countless opportunities for the keen photographer. Don’t miss your chance to be the first in the world to see the sunrise. Gisborne is the first city in the world to see the new day, making for a truly magical experience. Eastland is blessed with countless beaches offering excellent swimming and surfing.

WHANGARA, RUATORIA AND HICKS BAY
The quaint settlement of Whangara has become a popular spot in recent years, as it was the filming location for the movie ‘Whale Rider’ and home town of famous Kiwi writer Witi Ihimaera. On the meeting house sits the figure of a man riding a whale, and according to a local Maori legend, their ancestors arrived here on a whale's back.

Be sure to visit Hicks Bay, Ruatoria and Tolaga Bay – off the main tourist routes. You will find unashamedly restful townships brimming with East Coast character and charm.

UAWA - TOLAGA BAY
Uawa (also known as Tolaga Bay) is also steeped in Maori history and culture, and is also the site of some important encounters between Captain Cook and local Maori. The major attraction in Tolaga Bay is the 600 metre long historic wharf - said to be one of the longest in the Southern Hemisphere.

TE UREWERA NATIONAL PARK AND LAKE WAIKAREMOANA
Further inland you will discover the unspoiled beauty of Te Urewera National Park. This is the North Island’s largest untouched native forest, and spiritual home of the Tuhoe people – known as the “children of the mist”. There are numerous bush walks surrounding the stunning Lake Waikaremoana, a haven for hiking, bird watching, photography and camping.
